FOSTERING

There is an urgent need for Greyhound foster homes in El Paso.

GPA - El Paso, Lone Star Greyhounds, like so many pet adoption/rescue groups, relies solely on the kindness of foster families to house and care for their Greyhounds awaiting adoption into loving permanent homes. Without loving, caring foster homes, there would be no Greyhound adoption organization in the West Texas, Southern New Mexico area.

Lone Star Greyhounds furnishes all the food, medical care, bedding, bowls, toys and any support the foster family may need. The foster home furnishes the love.

Howie doesn't mind sharing his space with foster sis, Roo!

Time in foster care varies. It can be as short as a few days or as long as several months. But rest assured, you are never "stuck" with one of our foster Greyhounds. If the need arises when you are unable to continue to foster, we will move the Greyhound upon request.

The foster home doesn't need to have someone there all the time. Most of our foster families have regular  nine-to-five  jobs. Foster families can consist of a single person, married, or a roommate situations. Foster families can have children. Foster families can have other types of pets living in the household. (If the foster family already has a dog, the breed must not be considered a vicious breed).

Lone Star Greyhounds does require that your fencing be of a height and type that is suitable for containing the Greyhound when they are out exercising or "using the facilities". Greyhounds are NOT yard dogs. Lone Star Greyhounds does require that you agree to keep the foster Greyhound indoors. Contrary to popular belief, Greyhounds do not need a large yard. Greyhounds take retirement very seriously; most prefer to snooze on the couch or a comfy dog bed most of the day.

Being a foster parent isn't always easy. There may be a foster Greyhound that you just can't let go of. We have all flunked Fostering 101 at some point, and there isn't a thing wrong with that. Even if you only foster (than flunk) just one, that is one more Greyhound in a responsible loving home. But when you see a happy, beautiful Greyhound with his or her adoring forever family and know you had a huge part in it, it makes you feel good all the way down to your toes. You think to yourself, I helped do that! I was a part of making one Greyhound's dream of having a forever home come true!

Fostering isn't right for everyone. But you will never know until you try. Tell a friend, you never know who might be interested.
